Accenting furniture with Sharpies with Jill of All Trades

Writer's picture: Jill WashburnJill Washburn

This week, Jill Washburn, our Jill of All Trades, shows us how to accent the details on a piece of furniture … with a Sharpie! Wait… What?? Yes. A Sharpie!!

Jill took a headboard that she got for free on Facebook Marketplace. She sprayed it with a black satin finish paint. Then, to highlight the details of the piece, she outlined them with a metallic silver Sharpie.

She says you can just follow the lines of the mouldings or details with the fine-tipped marker. If you make a mistake, you can quickly remove the error with a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel or diaper wipe. Tou have, maybe, 30 seconds to a minute to remove your line. Once it dries, it's permanent.

You can go over your lines multiple times to "reinforce" or even them out.

Jill says that you can get creative with the color combinations. She likes the metallic colors on the black.

She also recommends using blues, pinks, purples, or greens, as well as greys or blacks on white furniture. Jill says to let your imagination run wild with the possible combinations.

She likens it to the pin-striping on a car; just a subtle detail that highlights the lines of a piece. You can do kitchen cabinets, or nearly any piece of hardline furniture.

PROJECT RATING: Super Easy!!
